Growing up in Wisconsin, National Dairy Month seriously felt like a really big deal. It seemed like there were so many celebrations for everyone to celebrate the state’s biggest food group. It wasn’t until I moved out of state that I realized it wasn’t as big of a celebration elsewhere.
No matter where I am, dairy will always hold a special place in my heart. It must be the Wisconsin in me! Lately, I’ve been trying to max out my protein and dairy (ahem, cottage cheese) is helping to get me there.
Whether you simply love dairy or are looking for some fresh recipes this summer, you’ve come to the right place. We’re celebrating our favorite dairy recipes in this blog post so we can pay tribute to National Dairy Month like the Wisconsinites we are.
Ice Cream in a Bag

There’s nothing that brings summer and dairy together than ice cream! This ice cream in a bag recipe is so fun to do with kids. It’s really easy to pull the ingredients together. The hard part? Waiting the few minutes before it’s ready to eat.
Cottage Cheese Cookie Dough
I only discovered this recipe on Instagram a few months ago and it already made its way into our Founder Favs Recipes Pack. I will admit – I was fully skeptical. It’s made with cottage cheese (really) and a few other ingredients listed below. I couldn’t believe that it would actually taste like cookie dough.
But, it’s absolutely delicious! When I need a high-protein treat or simply to keep the sweet tooth at bay, this recipe comes in clutch. It uses (mostly) common ingredients so that’s another win – it’s something that I can pull together in a pinch when the sweet tooth hits at 9:13 p.m. at night.
How to make cottage cheese cookie dough:
- 1 cup of cottage cheese, blended (no chunks remain)
- 1 cup of almond flour
- 1 tbsp of maple syrup or honey
- Splash of vanilla
- Chocolate chips (optional)
Once you have the cottage cheese blended so no chunks remain, you mix in the other ingredients. If it’s still a little runny, add a bit more almond flour. Personally, I think it tastes great if you chill in the fridge for a bit – but it’s also yummy straight after pulling it together.
Deviled Strawberries

These Deviled Strawberries are on my to make list, but they just sound oh-so-delicious! Coincidentally, peak strawberry season hits right in the middle of National Dairy Month. So it just feels like it’s serendipitous to make this recipe to celebrate!
Watermelon Whip

When the summer sun feels hot and the days get long, sometimes you just need a sweet treat to help endure whatever the hot weather brings your way.
This watermelon whip recipe serves up the best dessert to help you stay fresh and cool. Plus, there’s a good amount of Greek yogurt in here so you could almost count it as a high protein snack – win win, right?
Drop Biscuits
There are a few different recipes floating around for keto drop biscuits. I was completely skeptical about making these until I tried them and they are delicious. I love to make a fresh batch, and add scrambled eggs plus a protein (and more cheese) for a breakfast sandwich.
These biscuits give you a full taste of National Dairy Month as they are chock full of dairy:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups almond flour
- 2 whole eggs
- 4 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese
Preheat your oven to 400°F. Mix all of the ingredients together. If the dough feels a little dry, I will add a splash or two of milk to help. Then, drop the biscuit batter onto a baking sheet. The size of the biscuits may vary, depending on what you are making them for! If I am going to snack on them, I keep them a bit smaller. For a sandwich, make them a bit larger.
Before I stick them in the oven, I like to sprinkle some seasoning on top – currently loving the Everything But the Bagel Seasoning – for a bit more flavor.
Cook them in the oven for about 12 minutes, or until golden brown. For those that I don’t eat immediately, I store the rest in the fridge for the next couple of days. They taste delicious just warmed up with some melted butter on top! Plus, as an extra bonus, you’ll get 11 grams of protein from these beautiful biscuits.
Grandma’s Pancakes
This is another family favorite that showed up in our Founders Favs Recipe Pack! (If you haven’t downloaded it, check it out – it includes 10 of our favorite recipes that our families LOVE!)
I’ve been making these pancakes for several years – it’s one of those that started online and I modified here and there to make it my own. You can always add vanilla or your favorite in-season fruit for extra flavor.
Ingredients:
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1tbsp sugar
- 3 ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 3 tbsp butter, melted
Mix all of the dry ingredients together. Add in the wet and mix until together. Meanwhile, heat up a pan, lightly oiled, on the stove. Pour batter onto pan at desired size. Add any fruit that you want to add at this step!
Once you see bubbles, wait until they start to pop – then flip over and cook lightly until browned on both sides.
You can also keep the batter for leftovers (put it in a container in the fridge and just add milk the next morning!) or make it all up, and save the pancakes for leftovers, too!
There you have it! Some of the best recipes you can find for National Dairy Month so you can celebrate your favorite Wisconsinite’s number one food group.
